Tyne Tunnel Tech Keeps Commuters Mobile

A team of North East digital design specialists has unveiled a hi-tech new website to help keep commuters on the move in the Tyneside area.

Urban River, a branding and design agency based in South Shields, Tyne and Wear have completed the first phase of a major redevelopment of the Tyne Tunnel website. The new website - at www.tt2.co.uk - includes improved traffic information, web cams and tariff details, as well as the capability for people to view waiting times and other travel news via their iPhone or other mobile devices.

The new site also enables commuters to purchase new permits via the web.

Urban River's managing director Carl Buckley said: "It was great for our talents to be recognised as a company capable of creating a well designed and functional site handling large amounts of traffic and the ability to check journey times via your mobile is a real benefit."

The agency was appointed by TT2 - the Concessionaire appointed to operate and maintain all the Tyne Tunnels until 2037, and to oversee the design and construction of the New Tyne Crossing, currently the largest civil construction project in Europe and one which will bring a much needed second vehicle tunnel to the A19.

TT2 Managing Director, Trevor Jackson, said: "I'm delighted with our new website. It looks great and reflects TT2's philosophy to deliver high quality customer service as simply and effectively as possible. Urban River worked very closely with us throughout the design and development process and really came to understand what we wanted from our new site. We have some greatly improved functionality throughout the website making the online experience as user friendly as possible.

"We've had particularly good feedback from visitors for the new webcam feature, and the live journey time data. Both of these features have become essential journey planning tools for many of our customers"

The second phase of the redevelopment which is due to be completed by September will include an integrated payments system with e-commerce functionality to enable users to top their permits online whilst on the move and a desk top widget providing quick and immediate access to the new website.
