The best watch investments for your money
Published: May 2018
Unless you have unlimited funds and the right contacts, buying watches as an investment isn’t quite the goldmine that it used to be but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some timepieces worth investing in.
Below we outline some of the best watch investments for your money, including the classic names you would expect such as Rolex, Omega and Patek Philippe and also a couple you may not have thought of.
Omega Seamaster Professional 300m — £2,920
The Omega Seamaster is a sure-fire classic and James Bond’s model of choice. The Omega brand is increasing in value faster than anyone else and the quartz model is being removed from production. Discontinued watches are very collectable therefore it will be one of the soundest watch investments out there.
Rolex Submariner Oystersteel – £5,450
Rolex is the ultimate luxury watch brand and the iconic Submariner is one of the most successful diver’s watches in history. They rarely lose value and can be worn as an everyday watch.
The Submariner is as safe a watch investment as you are likely to find.
Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller—£9,050
Low initial sales may make the Deepsea an odd choice for a collector however large RRP rises have already seen big profits for the early adopters.
The Deepsea was a bold move for Rolex and a large step away from the classic Submariner but this will appeal to collectors in years to come.
Tudor Heritage Black Bay — £2,630
Not a name that immediately springs to mind however Tudor, sister company of Rolex, has an impressive heritage.
The stainless-steel Heritage Black Bay has classic styling that draws on Tudor’s history. At an RRP of £2,630 you are grabbing a bargain.
Tag Heuer Silverstone — RRP £5,250
The ‘Heur’ badged Monaco limited editions showed that there is a market for reissue vintage and the Silverstone, could be the next wise investment.
Reissued in 2010 in both brown and blue is almost identical to the seventies original with its large TV case and leather rally strap. Only 1,860 were made so get yours before the price rises.
Patek Philippe 5205 — RRP £36,720
Not many of us have thirty-seven grand lying about but if you did, there are few wiser investments than Patek Philippe, the world’s number one watchmaker.
Part of the ‘Complications’ range but still understated and elegant, this is undoubtedly a classic timepiece.
We’ve looked at the luxury end of the market but it’s not the only place to make money. If you are in it for the long haul why not invest in technology?
The original Apple Watch was a big seller but how many of these ground-breaking watches will still be around in ten or twenty years-time?
Similarly, anyone of a certain vintage will remember the classic Casio Calculator watch from the eighties. Certain models in their boxes are going for upwards of £200 today. I bet you wish you held onto yours.
Whatever your price point, buy a watch you can enjoy when it comes to watch investments. Buy the right one and it can also be a sound investment for years to come.
